The Numbers Are in for Hollywood’s Golden Summer | Movie Releases & Trends – Weekend of September 4, 2026

KEY INSIGHTS

Big IP and event films including “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” and “The Odyssey” were big contributors to making the summer of 2026 the most successful box office since 2013. The upcoming weekend will test the impact of nostalgia on admissions.

Recap of top cinema box office for September 4–6, 2026. Spider-Man: Brand New Day captures 17% of the box office, followed by Coyote vs. Acme at 15%.

As families took one final summer vacation the box office took a break as well, slowing down over Labor Day Weekend. As consumers prepared to shift into their fall routines, studios held off on any big new releases, leaving theaters to rely heavily on holdovers, family titles and the occasional re-release.

Still Swinging: “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” Held Firm Atop Box Office

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” remained firmly in the top spot, taking in $18.2 million in its sixth weekend and bringing its domestic total to nearly $918 million. It’s 19% decline from the prior weekend is another indication of just how durable this run has been.

In other big titles, “The Odyssey” continued its remarkable theatrical run as well, moving back into the #2 position in dollars with another $13.1 million, and staying at #3 in admissions. The film has now surpassed $1.6 billion globally, making it Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing film ever. Its continued strength eight weeks into its run is particularly notable for an R-rated, adult-skewing epic and reinforces the value audiences are placing on premium, event-style theatrical experiences.

“Coyote vs. Acme” also held up well in its second weekend, generating nearly $12 million and ranking #3 in dollars (#2 in admissions). Interestingly, its family-friendly positioning continues to give it an advantage when looking at admissions rather than revenue. This is an important distinction in the current marketplace: family titles can over-index in admissions because of lower-priced tickets for children and matinees, even when their share of box-office dollars is somewhat lower.

The weekend’s top three — “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” “The Odyssey” and “Coyote vs. Acme” — are all holdovers, accounting for nearly half of the weekend's domestic box office. That speaks to the extraordinary staying power of the summer's biggest titles, but it also highlights how dependent the marketplace can be on established properties and films with strong audience awareness during transitional periods on the release calendar.

It Was a Mafia and Motorsports Weekend

Two lead actors from the film "By Any Means" are pictured standing in the woods.

Two notable new films entered the Top 10. “By Any Means,” the new historical crime thriller starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Mark Wahlberg, opened in fourth place with $7.5 million. Set in 1966 Mississippi, the film follows a young Black FBI agent investigating the murders of civil rights leaders and working alongside notorious mafia hitman Greg Scarpa. The film has generated a mixed critical response, with Abdul-Mateen II's performance receiving praise while some critics have questioned the balance between the historical subject matter and the film's more stylized thriller elements.

Disney's “Cars” returned to theaters and generated another interesting signal about the value of library titles and nostalgia. The 2006 animated movie opened its re-release to approximately $6.3 million. For parents, re-releases like “Cars” offer an opportunity to introduce a younger generation to movies they themselves may have grown up watching, while giving theaters recognizable family programming during a traditionally slower weekend.

It's Not Just Magic, it's Family Magic: “Practical Magic 2” brings back Bullock and Kidman for a Next Generation Film

Opening this weekend is “Practical Magic 2” with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman returning nearly three decades after the original. The 1998 film was not a major box-office success when it was initially released, but it developed a substantial cult following through home video, streaming and seasonal viewing.

Joey King, known for Netflix’s “The Kissing Booth” film series, and Maisie Williams, best known for “Game of Thrones,” join the cast as the next generation of daughters all grown up. On social media, fans are especially excited to see Aria Stark return to screens and leaning into the witchy vibes.

Like other recent long-delayed sequels such as “Freakier Friday” and “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” “Practical Magic 2” isn't simply relying on an existing IP — it is bringing back the original stars and characters for an audience that has had time to build an emotional connection to the property. Let’s see whether that nostalgia can translate into a solid weekend and whether it can attract younger moviegoers who discovered the original long after its theatrical release.

The biggest story remains the health of the overall box office. Year-to-date the domestic box office has reached approximately $7.3 billion, up 21 percent from the same point last year. Even more impressive, the 2026 summer season generated approximately $4.76 billion, surpassing the previous summer record of $4.755 billion set in 2013.

At this pace, $10 billion for the full year is within reach, which would represent a major milestone for the theatrical business and mark the first time domestic box office has reached that level since 2019.
